The arbitration provided by the Articles of the Halls: three men drawn by lot from halls not party to a dispute, sitting within fourteen days, with power to make an award that the halls enforce against their own members.

The most used and least discussed institution in the county, hearing perhaps forty matters a year, mostly demarcation. Awards are obeyed because the alternative is a stoppage. Guildmaster Osbert Quill of the Colliers has twice walked out of an Articles panel.
