Warden Giles Harker

Warden of the Stonecourt Brotherhood, the Cambridge craft body that governs much of the stone-dressing apprenticeship, the lifting crews and machine-stone fitting. He speaks for the men who dress, lift and fit what the quarry brings out.

Warden Giles Harker heads the Stonecourt Brotherhood, one of the organised craft blocs that carry as much weight in Cambridge as prestige does whenever work rather than reputation is at issue. The Brotherhood governs much of the stone-dressing apprenticeship, the lifting crews and the fitting of machine-stone: the trades that take over once the quarry has done its part. Like the other Cambridge crafts it certifies nothing, but it governs recognised skill, customary demarcation, injury relief and the willingness of trained hands to take a job, and a White Walls certificate can make a process lawful without persuading the men who must perform it.

Harker is a trade authority who rose from physical work, and Stonecourt is a stronghold of the Yard Interest, which cares for wages, death payments, hours in dangerous heat, and masters who shift risk downward. The guild funds reach into domestic life, paying burial money and finding apprenticeships for widows’ sons, which is why a warden can move opinion faster than the Town Council and why neither the Collegium nor House Beaumont treats him as decorative.

He is said to attend every proving load on a new fitting himself, standing where his men stand, and to have little patience with examiners who have never lifted anything heavier than a pen.

Companies meet him when their work touches Stonecourt labour: an injury to be explained, a crew unwilling to take a job, or a question about a fitting that failed. His word opens more gates in the yards than a certificate does.

Giles Harker is very tall, broad-backed and long-armed, in his sixties, with coarse sandy-grey hair cropped short and receding and heavy grey mutton-chop whiskers on a clean chin. His face is long and deeply lined, his broad nose broken slightly to one side, his eyes a pale hazel, and one eyebrow is split by an old scar from a lifting accident. His oversized, thick-knuckled hands are scarred and pale with stone dust, as are his heavy working wool and leather, and he wears the bronze badge of the Brotherhood with a rule, plumb gauge and fitting hammer to hand.
