Lora Winterbourne

The Quiet Intermediary

Lora Winterbourne keeps the kind of houses Londoners speak of carefully. Her name is used wherever vice, discretion and information begin to overlap, and her drawing rooms do more to steady night London than any raid.

Lora Winterbourne holds one of the three kinds of authority that London’s shadow economy recognises among its named faces. Hester Grayshott’s runs through Greywater and the culverts; Stephen Pomeroy’s through grievance shaped into platform heat; hers through furnished rooms and cautious supper tables. She is a polite intermediary of the sort whose drawing rooms stabilise the city’s vice more reliably than a raid ever could, and night London speaks of her houses more carefully than it speaks of theatres, singers or boxmasters.

Her rooms are valued first for discretion and second, by those who understand them, for what their servants quietly hear. London’s houses of pleasure are information systems in their own right: a hostess, doorkeeper, singer or house physician may know more about a district’s true alliances than most titled men, and in her establishments such knowledge is gathered and kept rather than spilled across a supper table. Stage gossip that crosses from Playhouse Lane into the better houses of Velvet Court passes close enough to her rooms that she is seldom the last to hear it.

She keeps no stair or quay and commands no porters. What she arranges are introductions, silences and meetings between people who cannot be seen to meet: a clerk and an envoy, a creditor and the heir who owes him, a respectable man and the matter he would prefer never reached his club. Hers is the name used when a question is neither quite criminal nor quite polite.

Companies meet her by introduction, never by knocking. She may be a patron who wants something discovered, a source who can place a stranger by his acquaintance before he has given his name, or the quiet reason a commission stops being offered. Crossing her is seldom punished openly; it simply becomes known in the rooms where such things are known, and a band that has lost her goodwill will find doors that stood open last week unaccountably closed.

In person

A tall, elegant woman of about forty-six, slightly full-figured, Lora Winterbourne wears her very dark, almost black hair in an elaborate pinned style, with an early streak of silver over one temple. Her face is oval, strong-jawed and high-cheekboned, with slightly hooded hazel eyes and a beauty mark near the mouth. She favours dark plum and burgundy evening dress with a fitted black bodice, restrained gold jewellery and gloves, and is rarely without calling cards, letters or a well-timed introduction. Those who know her assume, correctly, that a very small pistol or a narrow sleeve knife is never far away.
