The house is identified with pilgrimage roads, hospitals, public benefaction, charitable foundations, and the use of conspicuous piety to make ambition socially useful. Its hospitals and rest houses are praised across the realm, and among the Great Houses it is commonly found beside House Halden, the Golden Sheaves, in the alignment that sets itself against metropolitan appetite.

Benedict is genuinely generous and entirely aware that generosity creates clients. Broad and prosperous in build, the duke is a man in his mid-fifties with dark, almost black hair greying slightly at the temples, a short dark beard, a warm complexion and deep-set blue-grey eyes, one eyelid resting a little lower than the other from an old injury. He dresses in dark, respectable clothes befitting a pious nobleman and patron of charities, never showy. His manner is warm and open-handed, with the quiet attentiveness of a man who knows exactly what his kindness is worth.
