Thurwell garrison
Also called Thurwell · the interior work
The interior blockhouse, with four men, the smallest garrison the Crown keeps anywhere in the realm. It now stands deep in fallow ground, and its road runs back through four miles no parish walks.
Ties
- one of the Crown garrisons of the northern march
- burial ground consecrated by the chapter
At the table
It is relieved twice a year, buries its dead in ground the chapter consecrated inside the wall, and buys from bounty men. Its shrine stands outside the gate. The volunteers come almost entirely from the two nearest shrine villages. Its serjeant says nothing is kept there because nothing is needed. It stands where it does because of the Losing of Crowdyke Gate.
