The Ash Scouring of London

The scouring by which compromised quarters of old London were burned or broken to make a lawful beginning of the city's return, commonly placed in 4041 A.C., though some Oxford copies prefer 4040. British memory holds it central: not random destruction but the terrible price of reclamation.
